The poetry of new beginnings…
"In the flutter of eyelashes and the curl of tiny fingers lies the poetry of new beginnings."
Recently, I stumbled upon this quote (author unknown), and it felt like the perfect way to describe the experience of being a new parent in those initial days with a newborn babe. Although my children are all teenagers now, I still vividly recall the awe I felt when I first saw my baby open his eyes, the softness of that crest of hair, freshly washed for the first time, and the astonishment that I was going to be able to take this baby home with me. I still laugh about that moment!
For most of the years I was having babies, I worked for another photographer specializing in newborn portraits. I was also a budding photographer myself. I'm fortunate to say that I have many beautiful photos of my kiddos from the early days – the sleep-deprived, can't-really-remember-what-day-it-is days. Every time I see one, the feeling of holding them in my arms comes rushing back. I can almost smell the scent of their fuzzy heads and tiny toes. While the cell phone photos are sweet, they are small and do not compare to the details captured in a professional frame.
As fortunate as I feel to have portraits of my babies, I am equally happy to help other moms (and dads) celebrate their new baby and provide them with an anchor back to these fleeting early days. Fast forward to last week when Abbi brought Sawyer and his big brothers to the studio. I asked her later if she could believe he's here, and she said, "No, I keep looking at him, wondering if he's real." I hope these images help her hold onto that wonder so she can revisit it when he's 10, 20, and 30…
